Hailing from St Louis, Larry Hughes was a two-way combo guard with a knack for getting buckets and racking up steals. His all-round game led to a lengthy albeit journeyman-esque career. Drafted 8th overall out of St Louis University by the 76ers, Larry flashed his potential alongside his good friend Allen Iverson. After one-and-a-half seasons with the 76ers, Hughes was traded to Golden State. Where he became a full time starter with his future Wizards kin, Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. His numbers rose as a full time starter and he was beginning to realise his potential. In the 2002 season he would sign with the Washington Wizards. Whilst with Washington he would blossom. Flanked by Jamison and Arenas, the Wizards would reach the playoffs in 2004-05. As a part of the Wizards, Hughes would enjoy two seasons averaging 20ppg and one season in which he led the league with an absurd 2.9 steals per game. Whilst with the Wizards, ‘St. Lou Larry’ was unlucky to gain an All-Star berth. His breakout seasons coincided with another stint in Free Agency. This time he signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Sadly for Larry, the LeBron-Hughes tandem did not equate to NBA Championships. With the duo only reaching one Finals, in 2007, Hughes was eventually traded to the Chicago Bulls. He closed out his career with stints in Chicago, Charlotte, New York and Orlando. Although his shooting was inefficient, Larry Hughes smooth all-around prowess and his St Louis swag make him one of LO-FI: The Magazine’s ‘Real Hoopers’.
